Nature’s Flatware

Hey friends!  How about a TGIT? (Thank God it’s Thursday?)  The weekend is very close, which makes this girl very happy. :)

As much as I love one my various bowls of oats in the morning, and I have probably been on an oatmeal breakfast kick for a couple of weeks now, this morning I wanted something different.  I looked in the fridge to see a half of a cantaloupe that needed be used staring back at me, but instead of cubing it up as a side, I thought, why not make it the main dish – perhaps as a vessel to hold something else?

I’ve seen and used other products of nature as flatware -

lettuce as little dishes for various fillings,

or avocados as little cups,

so why not create a Cantaloupe Bowl?

I hallowed out the cantaloupe, cleaning out all the seeds, before proceeding to fill the cavity.  My choice of fillings this morning were raw walnuts and dried cherries, but the possibilities are endless!  Fresh berries, dried raisins or cranberries, slivered almonds, pecan pieces, shredded coconut, or any other fruit and/or nuts you enjoy would all be fabulous inside this bowl!

Along with a hot mug of cinnamon vanilla tea, this meal was extremely balanced and nutritious!  With complex carbs, protein, and healthy fats, my Cantaloupe Bowl kept me full and satisfied, giving me energy until lunch rolled around.  The tart, chewy cherries joined with the crunch of the walnuts and the sweet, cold cantaloupe, was a delicious and healthy combination of flavors and textures.

Time for a workout!  Have a great night! :)

Question: Have you ever used food as flatware?

A little yogurt would have been good in there too! I have used a spaghetti squash as a bowl before, but that’s just about it!

Yes, or cottage cheese for those who eat dairy. :) I still have to try spaghetti squash!
